The Sun claim the Red Devils boss has informed Rooney’s camp that he is no longer guaranteed a starting place.
Mourinho is not looking to sell the England international but the Special One wanted to make his intentions clear about Rooney’s future – that he’s no longer their star man.
The 31-year-old has not started United’s last four league games and was absent for their Chelsea humiliation with a ‘muscle injury’.
Rooney has two-and-a-half years remaining on his current contract at Old Trafford but has offers elsewhere.
The Sun add that clubs in the MLS and the Chinese Super League are keen to sign the attacker should he decide to leave United.
Money could be an issue though as Rooney picks up a staggering £250,000-a-week with the Red Devils
However, there could be a negotiated pay-off to ease that burden and make Rooney more attractive for potential suitors.
Rooney has spent 12 years at United, playing 532 games for the Red Devils.
He has netted a remarkable 246 goals in all competitions and is just four goals short of breaking Sir Bobby Charlton’s all time record
